What Does an Arborist Do?

Qualified arborists know everything about trees including health, management, removal and hazard assessment. Whether it’s tree pruning, “tree surgery” (which is why arborists are often called tree doctors), tree and stump removal or aesthetic improvement of the tree, arborists know exactly what to do and how to do it in a safe and effective way.

What does an arborist do?

Qualified arborists prioritise safety especially because work sites around trees are often hazardous and unfavourable. Working at heights, exposed to sunshine and weather, potential pest infestation and unforeseen circumstances put professionals’ lives at risk.

The arborists or tree doctors should anticipate all the hazards and circumstances and make the necessary adjustments and preparations. They have to prepare and watch out for unstable trees and branches, falling or swinging objects (could be tree branches or overhead power lines), potential electric contact with nearby utility lines, uneven and slippery surfaces, tree vibration (e.g. while tree work is ongoing), debris because of windy condition, rainfall, allergic reaction, fatigue or dehydration and mishandling of tree work equipment.

It’s a long list of dangers and hazards, which is why tree work should be left to professionals. Tree pruning, removal and other works require a heightened level of training (e.g. Certificate II in Arboriculture) and awareness about the surrounding dangers. In addition, arborists should have public liability insurance and workers compensation insurance. As mentioned earlier, there could be unforeseen circumstances that might put the arborist’s life at danger.

Notice that a thorough preparation and training is the key to completing the job safely. After all, the job is hazardous and that the tree work should be done effectively and promptly before the tree, branches or its stump cause any damage or injury. Because of the time element and the exposure to outdoor elements, a higher level of safety precautions should be implemented on site. The job also requires a high level of awareness because of the changing conditions outside.
