tree pruning northern beaches

Eucalyptus tree trimming and pruning services.

By Northern Beaches arborist, Chris Allchin.

A retirement village in Mona Vale recently contracted us to prune large eucalyptus trees overhanging the property. Residents were concerned about limbs dropping and loss of light amenity into common areas.  Additionally, the eucalypt leaves were clogging gutters which were difficult to access and clean.

There are strict regulations regarding tree pruning on the Northern Beaches, particularly native trees like Eucaplyts.   As a Level 5 arborist, I am proficient in all Council regulations and, importantly, pruning procedures that  minimise long and short-term impact on the tree’s health. When trees are pruned incorrectly, rot can get into the tree and the regrowth (epicormic growth) is weakly attached. If this occurs, as the tree grows larger, the epicormic regrowth can be unhealthy and, thereby, extremely dangerous.

The Eucapyts at the property were growing on the neighbouring golf course so I had to successfully liase with all parties involving access, noise and cleanup.

Eipicormic growth and why trees must be pruned correctly.

Epicormic growth refers to the growth of shoots or branches that arise from dormant or adventitious buds on the trunk or branches of a tree. These buds typically remain inactive or suppressed under normal conditions, but they can be triggered to grow in response to stress factors such as fire, pruning, or injury to the tree.

Adventitious buds can play important roles in regeneration and response to stress. For example, if a tree undergoes pruning or experiences damage to its main stem, adventitious buds may sprout from the remaining tissue to generate new growth. Similarly, in some species, adventitious buds can form along roots, allowing the tree to propagate vegetatively.

tree removal dee why

Tree removal and lopping Dee Why.

By Northern Beaches arborist, Chris Allchin.

We recently attended a strata unit building in Dee Why, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, where a series of tuckeroo trees (cupaniopsis aracardioides) had been planted in brick garden beds, too close to the building.

All too often we are contacted by Owners Corporations and Strata Managers on the Northern Beaches asking us to remove trees that have been inappropriately planted by developers.  They grow too tall, too close to the building, or their root system starts knocking down walls and damaging footpaths.

Tuckeroos are a fast-growing tree, with a thick crown and invasive root system.  As is evident in the photos taken at this Dee Why unit block, the tuckeroo’s strong root system had cracked the thick walls of the garden beds and were pushing them over in other sections.  Of concern is that the trees were only half their potential height and could grow to double their size when mature.

The best course of action was tree removal so that more appropriate trees could be planted.

In total, we removed 4 tuckeroo trees from the site.  We trimmed and thinned the canopy of the remaining trees to allow better light penetration into the lower units.

tree removal dee why

The tree roots were cracking and pushing out the walls of the garden beds in numerous places.

When planting a new garden, seek advice from an experienced arborist.

This Dee Why tree removal job highlights the importance of seeking the advice and services of a qualified arborist when selecting and planting trees as part of a new development.

Planting inappropriate trees for the site can lead to expensive problems – like the retaining wall repairs required at this property – and the trees having to be removed.

The best option is appropriate tree selection from the outset.

Trimming just a few branches of a majestic Norfolk Pine tree drastically improved the view at this Manly property.

By Northern Beaches arborist, Chris Allchin.

The Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla) is synonymous with the Northern Beaches coastline.  This iconic species, endemic to Norfolk Island, is well suited to our oceanfront location due to its high tolerance of salt and wind.  Capable of growing up to 60 metres tall, whilst a beautiful and majestic tree, they can easily block a water view.

I was contacted by the owner of a property in Manly that overlooked Little Manly Beach and Sydney Harbour.  A very large Norfolk Pine in their neighbour’s property had grown to a significant size and girth and was now blocking most of the client’s water views.

tree loppers northern beaches

The client had sought approval from their neighbour who kindly allowed them to remove some of the higher Norfolk Pine branches.  The neighbour was very specific about what branches could be removed. Specifically, they didn’t want any of the lower branches removed or trimmed as they offered privacy from properties higher up.

My team worked cohesively with the client and their neighbour and the thinning of the Norfolk Pine proceeded without any problems. Surprisingly, the neighbour who owned the tree was ecstatic with the extra light that now flooded into their outdoor entertaining area.

Due to the size of the tree, we only needed to cut approximately 5% of the branches to drastically enhance the customer’s Harbour views.  It was a win for the tree, our client and the neighbour!

What you need to know about ‘tree lopping’.

When choosing a ‘tree lopping company’ you should avoid using ones that advertise ‘topping’ or ‘lopping’ as a service provided. While this is a common term used by consumers when searching for someone to trim or prune a tree, ‘tree lopping’ is not an acceptable practice and can be very harmful to a tree.

Banksia Arborcare is a reputable and highly experienced business in the tree industry with a great understanding of the negative effects ‘tree lopping’ can have on your trees and the wider environment.

As professional and qualified arborists and horticulturists, we don’t undertake any ‘tree lopping’ and don’t recommend employing tree loppers who don’t have arboriculture qualifications due to the detrimental impact they have on the environment.

Tree Services Northern Beaches

By Northern Beaches arborist, Chris Allchin.

I was recently called to remove a firewheel tree (Stenocarpus sinuatus) at a Fairlight property on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.  The base of the tree’s trunk and roots were lifting the deck and pushing over the footings. Due to the tree’s proximity to the property, we were able to remove it without Council approval.

The firewheel tree (Stenocarpus sinuatus) is an Australian rainforest tree that can grow up to 40 metres tall with a trunk up to 1.4 metres wide. Due to the striking bright red ornamental flowers, it’s a popular ornamental addition to many Northern Beaches gardens. In fact, the beautiful firewheel tree flowers were the subject of Australian artist Margaret Preston’s most recognised print, Wheelflower (circa 1929).

northern beaches tree lopping

Incorrect tree lopping in the past had created problems.

The firewheel tree at this Northern Beaches property had developed growth faults called codominant stem which could have made it dangerously unstable in the future. Additionally, incorrect pruning in the past (technically called ‘topping’) by an inexperienced tree lopper had further compromised the tree’s health.

Topping (or tree lopping) is a poor way to prune a tree.

Topping is a poor way of pruning trees and is against Northern Beaches Council tree regulations. Topping isn’t recommended because the regrowth (epicormic growth) will be weakly attached to the tree and, if left to grow large, will likely fall.

Topping is the indiscriminate cutting of tree branches down to stubs or lateral branches that are not large enough to assume the terminal role.  Topping trees is perhaps the most harmful tree practice known and yet, after 25 years of literature, it still remains common practice by unqualified tree loppers. Other common terms for ‘topping’ include tree lopping, heading, tipping or rounding-over.  All of which should be avoided at all costs for the tree’s health and the safety of everything around it.

It’s important to seek advice from an arborist.

This Fairlight tree highlights the importance of seeking the advice and services of a qualified arborist, like Chris, and not just employing a ‘tree lopper’ from social media to prune and trim trees at your property.

A codominant stem is where two or more branches of similar size and dominance emerge from a tree’s main trunk or a larger branch at the same height and angle. These branches compete for dominance and grow vertically without one overpowering the other. As a result, they develop a joint or shared leadership in the tree’s structure. This is evident in the before photo above.

While codominant stems can be found natural in some tree species, in various tree species and can occur naturally or as a result of poor pruning practices or tree damage. Over time, the union between codominant stems can weaken, making the tree susceptible to structural failure or splitting during storms or under heavy loads.

When codominant stems are present in a tree, it is important to evaluate their structural integrity and potential risks. Consulting an arborist or tree care professional is recommended to assess the tree’s condition and determine if any remedial actions, such as pruning or cabling, are necessary to mitigate potential hazards.

tree removal balgowlah

Northern Beaches tree removal.

By Northern Beaches arborist, Chris Allchin.

The owner of this Balgowlah property, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, wanted a large banksia tree removed that had grown much bigger than they anticipated. The tree branches were causing damage to the carport and the roots digging up paving.

As tree lovers, the owners had built the carport around the tree, wanting to retain such an important native species.  They contacted arborist and tree removal specialist, Chris Allchin, to assess the situation in the hope the tree could be saved.

Unfortunately, Chris explained that the banksia would only continue to grow larger, the root system spread further and more damage caused.

The only possible long-term solution was tree removal.

Whilst the banksia wasn’t exceptionally large in comparison to the huge gums and palm trees we are regularly called upon to remove or lop, the location and angle of the banksia posed numerous problems.  Located between the carport and fence, access was difficult and we were unable to use our large tree removal equipment.

Additionally, there were two adjoining neighbouring backyards directly behind the carport, both with pools and glass fences.  The angle of the tree meant branches were overhanging the pools.  The safe and secure handling of the tree branches as they were being removed was paramount so they didn’t cause damage to the client’s property or that of the surrounding neighbours.

The finished result was successful banksia tree removal without even a scratch on the carport, fence or any inconvenience to the neighbours.

tree removal manly

Cut down dead camphor laurel tree (Cinnamomum camphora).

By Northern Beaches arborist, Chris Allchin.

We were recently called upon to remove a dying camphor laurel tree from a Manly backyard on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

While, from ground level, the tree looked healthy, it was clear that the top of the tree had already died.  This is typical behaviour of a dying camphor laurel tree – they often die at the top and gradually the disease spreads down the tree.

Removing a dying tree presents several challenges.

As a professional arborist, I am well aware that a dying camphor laurel tree presents several tree removal challenges.  The dead branches are typically extremely brittle and, while they may appear large and sturdy, they are unable to safely hold the weight of a grown man.  In my 20+ years working in this industry, I have heard many stories of unqualified and inexperienced tree loppers having terrible accidents when removing branches from these lofty trees.

It is common for large trees like camphor laurels, jacaranda and liquidambar’s to become extremely brittle when dying.  This isn’t a problem for our team as we have the skills and tools to successfully tackle the removal of these large species without incident.

Once onsite at the Manly property, we first assess the tree’s health.  We initially removed one of the lower, dead limbs and found it was extremely light. There was no way the upper limbs could support our weight!

Watching the video above, you can see how we removed the dying camphor laurel tree without relying on the upper branches.

northern beaches tree removal manly

Tree removal with difficult access.

The location of the large tree at the rear of the Manly property, accessible only by limited side access, may have provided challenges for others but not our team.

To keep our time on-site to a minimum, always mindful of our client’s budget, our team works like a well-oiled production line, cutting the branches and trunk into manageable sizes, so we can quickly carry them to street level where our chipper and truck are located.

Northern Beaches Council tree removal regulations.

Under Northern Beaches Council tree removal regulations, within which this Manly property is located, camphor laurels are considered a ‘weed species’ and approval isn’t required to remove these trees.

The camphor laurel is a highly invasive, evergreen tree that can grow up to 20-30 metres in height. Native to China, Japan, Korea, India and Vietnam, camphor laurels were introduced to Australia in 1877.  They can now be seen growing in many Northern Beaches and North Shore gardens.  The camphor laurel is mildly toxic to humans and all parts of the plant are poisonous.  Allergic skin reactions may also occur.

It’s important to note that, while camphor laurels are considered a ‘weed species’ by many Councils, some Councils still require approval before trimming or removing them.  Please contact Chris directly for advice.
