Live on the Northern Beaches? How to choose native trees for your garden.

Ask Chris, Northern Beaches Arborist and Horticulturist.

CLIENT QUESTION
“I live on the Northern Beaches and would like to plant native trees in my garden that will attract local birds and wildlife. Can you please advise what trees are native to the Northern Beaches?”
CHRIS’ ANSWER

Trees are a wonderful asset in any garden. They provide shade, privacy, restful greenery and a safe home for wildlife.  One of the common problems I find in Northern Beaches gardens is caused by incorrect species selection.

Most of the trees we have to remove have outgrown the space in which they were planted. Many start damaging drains and house foundations. Many people like the look of a tree and plant it without thinking of how big it will become and what the root structure will do.

Things to consider before planting a tree.

Before deciding on a tree consider such things as the ultimate size, whether it’s evergreen or deciduous, and how the root structure will form and grow.

I recommend taking a walk around your local neighbourhood to see first hand what is growing well and what is not.  For example, a bangalow palm will thrive in Oxford Falls however won’t survive salt and wind exposure at Narrabeen.

It is also important to plant trees that will benefit native wildlife.

Keep trees well-watered.  Additionally, they grow better in a mulched garden bed than in a lawn.

Watch out for dead branches, fungus cavities, cracks and splits, borer damage and dieback.

Trees, like the rest of the garden and lawn, require regular maintenance.  Trees are probably the most overlooked plant in the garden yet they have the ability to be the most dangerous.
